Maureen Douglas, Director, Operations Communications - Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC)
Maureen Douglas has served on the 2010 team from Vancouver 2010 Bid Corporation to Vancouver Organizing Committee as Director, Operations Communications. She serves as senior communications representative for VANOC in Whistler and the Sea to Sky corridor. Her role includes community consultation, media relations, Aboriginal relations, events and operations planning as well as overseeing the live appearance program for the 2010 mascots.
Douglas's career includes special event production, cultural tourism and community development. Her early work in the special event industry included positions with the Vancouver Children's Festival, the Vancouver Playhouse; contract entertainment programming for the 1988 Calgary Olympics and the development and launch of Whistler's Summer Festival program.
For the past 20 years she has lived and worked in the Whistler area. From 1990 to 1999, Douglas served as Director of Festivals and Events for Tourism Whistler.
She then ran her own event production and cultural tourism firm, Moideas Management, for four years working with clients that include Intrawest, the RMOW and Tourism Whistler, producing events such as Reunion 2000, First Night Whistler and the Whistler WinterStart Festival. She has also been an instructor in the tourism marketing faculty at BCIT and developed tourism capacity-building strategies for the Village of Pemberton.
Douglas has also served on various volunteer committees and boards including Leadership Sea to Sky, the Whistler Advisory Parks and Recreation Committee, the Whistler Arts Strategy Committee, the Whistler Children's Centre board and the Whistler Film Festival board.
Douglas was born and raised in Vancouver. She lives in beautiful Pemberton, BC (often Canada's formidable hot spot) with her partner and two children. She enjoys mountain biking, outdoor recreation, music, skiing and a really good cup of coffee.
Maureen credits positive, “outside the box” thinking, a well-developed sense of humour and a commitment to creating a meaningful team dynamic for much of her success. She surrounds herself with enthusiastic, passionate people and has benefited from strong community support throughout her career.
